I don’t enjoy playing with my kids. . . Watch the mommy judgers tell me I’m awful. . . But really, I love BEING with my kids when they are playing. I love spending time with them, being around them, watching them play, but the actual playing? Nah boo, I’m good. . . I’ve never been a “get down on the floor and play My Little Pony or Hot Wheels” kinda mom. It just isn’t me. But give me an arcade? Ooooh girl, yes. . . Being at an arcade reminds me of being a kid when my dad would take me. I love it. I love the games and the noise and the fun of it all. That’s where I shine. I will play games with my kids and technically, that’s playing. . . The point? Stop trying to be the mom you’re not. Shine where you shine. Be fun where you are fun. My memories of childhood aren’t based on all the things my parents didn’t do, it’s based on the awesomeness of what they did do. . . 90's diet culture gave us an unnatural belief in magic pills. "Keep doing exactly what you're doing and see totally different results." No need to work through your mindset, or learn how to be a healthy person from the inside out, just trust in the magic pill, the magic diet, the magic wand that will fix everything for you. . . It's garbage. . . We all want the results. I hear it everyday. We want to be "less stressed, less overwhelmed, less unhappy." We want clean homes and kids that listen. We want spouses that do everything without ever being asked and we want perfect lives that just magically appear out of no where. . . But how many of us are willing to put in the work? . . "Oh but Kendra, I WORK." I don't mean physical labor. I don't mean running yourself ragged day in and day out. I don't mean staying busy for the sake of staying busy. I mean the WORK, the WEEERK. . . The deep dive into your mindset. The willingness to admit what isn't working so you can change it. The asking for help and being coachable enough to take it. The willingness to make decisions and fail over and over again in the name of figuring out what works. The investment of money and time into programs, books, podcasts, teachers that can help you. . . Most importantly, the work of letting go of your excuses. . . Because if you're not willing to do that, how are you going to maintain your results? If you woke up tomorrow and it will all done for you, how would you know how to maintain it? How would you know what to do? How quickly would it be before you went right back to the old ways? Magic pills in life only give you instant change, not lasting results. . . The transformation is in the work, not the results. . . So what work are you doing today to see the results YOU want?

I suffer from a lot of OCD tendencies that I don’t talk about much. For the most part, I’m able to keep it under wraps. I’m able to act “normal.” I’m able to not let it get in the way of my daily life, usually. . . I don’t talk about it much. I know there are people suffering so much worse than I am and honestly, I feel guilty even bringing it up when I do. But the feelings are real. The tendencies are real. The compulsions are real. . . To-do lists were a form of compulsion for me for a long time. I obsessed over making lists, all day long. That isn’t an exaggeration. I had notepads in my purse, my car, my nightstand, everywhere. I kept lists on my phone. I checked them all day. I compulsively felt a shaking sensation when I couldn’t get it all done. I worried endlessly that I wasn’t doing enough: in school, at work, in my business, at home. I lived inside my head and in my lists in a way no one knew about. I was stealthy, usually. . . My rituals got worse over time: checking and rechecking (and rechecking the rechecks of the rechecks) before leaving my house, or a client’s house, creating thought patterns I had to go through in a set way before I could do something, getting up out of bed in a panic worried I hadn’t done what I thought I needed to do. I called myself a worrier. Really, I was a controller and the compulsions gave my control. . . If you want to know why I sing - no, bellow-about routines, it’s because routines gave me a light in the midst of the chaos inside my own head. Routines give me control so I can enjoy my life without lists upon lists upon lists. Routines pulled me out of a bout of postpartum anxiety that stemmed from my need to control every aspect of my life (and with a newborn, that’s impossible.) . . Routines aren’t just about checking things off a list everyday. Routines settle my brain. They’ve given me an alternative to rituals. Things still get done without the compulsion attached to it. . . I’m not perfect. I still feel the pull to control my world. I create work where there is none. But I’m working on it. I don’t love routines because they control my life. I love them because they give me back control OVER my life.
The perfect, simple answer to the most passive aggressive comment on someone else’s life. . . I live to create a nice life for myself, so thanks boo, it IS nice. ✌🏼
What's that sound? That's the sound of feathers being ruffled. . . You aren't permanently attached to your mindset. Your perfectionism, your mom guilt, your need to control, your doubt...those aren't WHO you are, those are WHAT you think. . . You're better than the mindset you continue to allow. You're stronger than the mindset you mask as a personality trait. . . Your mindset isn't limited and neither are you.
😴 Confession: I’m lazy. . . That always strikes people as odd because I’m a go-getter. I’m successful in my business. I like to work. . . But I really have no interest in doing any more work than I have to. I love relaxing. I love lounging. I enjoy just being and in our culture, that’s viewed as lazy. So, I’m lazy. . . But then I think about how ridiculous it is to work harder when you don’t have to? For moms, I call this “hamster wheel homemaking.” Waking up every day, jumping on the wheel, running until you can’t feel your feet and then hopping off just before you drop dead of exhaustion so you can do it all again the next day. . . I spent years doing that, pretending that being busy meant I was accomplished, meant that I wasn’t lazy. What a waste of energy. . . Routines allow me to be “lazy.” Routines provide me with freedom. Routines give me power and control over my day. Routines keep me off the hamster wheel. I’m a person, not a rodent. . .
